Most of us have owned one of those pieces of furniture that's backed by particle board and looks like it was slapped together in a couple hours. These pieces are cheaper, but the discount comes with its own price. In a short time that furniture will be falling apart and it'll be time to buy a new one. In contrast, if you want something that will last a life time, it might be a good idea to look at more solid construction.
So if you are going to go with solid wood, what kind should you look for? Well, there are lots of options ranging from the relatively cheap pine to the much more expensive mahogany. If you'd like a good solid, middle range priced wood I would personally go with oak.
Once you decide on a material, you must then look for the individual piece of furniture. You will have the easiest time finding high quality craftsmanship if you purchase an unfinished piece.
Furniture makers frequently use stains and other decorative factors to hide flaws in the workmanship. Darker colors make it more difficult to spot these flaws or weaknesses. If the furniture is unfinished, however, you will be able to see every detail.
You should look specifically at the joints of the piece, where separate pieces of wood have been joined together. There are many different types of joints, some more stable than others. As a general rule, the more surface area there is to the joint the more solid the connection will be.
Knots in the wood is also something to watch out for. If these are loose they may come out, leaving an indentation in your furniture. If you are looking for a more rustic look you may prefer this, but if you'd rather have smooth lines stay away from furniture with a great number of knots.
If you're unsure about anything, be sure to ask questions. It might help to go to a smaller store where you can speak to the craftsman personally.
The extra time you spend finding good quality furniture know will pay off in years of use to come.
