You cant deny the importance of file cabinets. Whether you are buying one for office or home use, file storage cabinets are simply the best pieces of furniture for keeping your documents safe and organized. Modern cabinets however now come in a variety of shapes, shades and sizes. Before you can get the right kind of filing cabinet to serve your needs, you need to know more about your options.
There are two major types of filing cabinets. The first is the traditional vertical filing unit. This type stretches forward and upward and allows files to be arranged in single file from front to back in drawers. Before you buy one, find out what kind of files you will be dealing with. Some cabinets can accommodate only letter size files while others can accommodate both letter and legal size files. There are also some cabinets that need to be fitted with special hang rails to hold hanging folders.
The second type of file cabinet is the lateral unit. These units allow you to choose shorter models because the extra lateral space available allows side to side filing. Just like vertical cabinets, you need to check the dimensions to determine if they can accommodate the kinds of files you will be dealing with.
File cabinets come in different number of drawers from single drawers up to five. If you plan on storing several files under several categories, go for multiple-drawer cabinets. Those with five cabinets often have to be fitted with roll out shelves since most people will be unable to view files from a fifth drawer.
In some cases, file cabinets can have only single drawers. Those that are more stylish than functional feature decorative mini shelves on top of the single drawer. The more functional models often feature a bottom file drawer and one or two top drawers for pencils and other office supplies.
Some file cabinets have functions other than for storing. These types have open or closed adjustable shelves installed over file drawers. Some models are a combination of safe and filing cabinet.
Mobility is another thing you may want to consider. Another point to consider is cabinet mobility. There are filing cabinet models that come with small or large, recessed or visible wheels. If you are the type of person who likes reorganizing your office frequently, you may want a file cabinet that you can move around easily.
A final aspect to think over is the cabinet material. Aside from steel, filing cabinets can now be made of wood, plastic or a combination of materials. Obviously, steel is the most durable of these materials. Wood however is often more attractive and stylish. Plastic is the most affordable option.
When it comes to file cabinets, there are a lot to choose from that it can be quite difficult to pick one if you do not know where to start. As long as you have these considerations to keep in mind, though, you should be able to find the one that matches your needs.
